The Mount Edith Cavell Hike follows the "Path of the Glacier" trail. Our guide will transport you to and from the trailhead of the 'path of the glacier' while providing enlightening interpretation of the local ecology, and heritage of the immediate area. The walk usually requires 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours to complete about 1 mile in length, gaining 170 ft. of elevation over half of this distance. On this hike, you can experience the majesty of Mount Edith Cavell towering over a mile above you and watch icebergs calve off the Angel and Cavell glaciers into Cavell Pond! Overall, this tour lasts about 3 hours. Please ensure you bring water, closed toe footwear, and a jacket.

The parking lot is at 5500 feet. The walk is 1.4km with an elevation gain of 170 feet. Part of the trail is hard surface, but most is glacial til and rock. Running shoes or good walking shoes are recommended. Please - NO open toed sandals. Rainwear (poncho)is available if the weather requires it.

The commentary on this tour includes the human history of the Icefields Parkway, the fur trade and the importance of this valley and Mount Edith Cavell, the geology of the area, flora and fauna of the different zones we pass through and finally, who Nurse Edith Cavell was.

FAQ

Q Are we going to run into mosquitoes?
A Very rare on this tour. We do experience a flying non-biting insect at different times of the season. They can be there in the morning and not in the afternoon. It is hard to say from tour to tour and they only last a few short weeks.

Q What if it is raining?
A MEC is the highest mountain in the area, therefore creating it's own weather patterns. It can be raining in town and we have been above the clouds in brilliant sunshine at MEC. If it should be raining on the mountain, the whole north face of Edith Cavell has too many waterfalls to count. It is a good tour no matter what the weather.

Q What animals are we going to see?
A Because we are traveling up to the Alpine Zone, there are very few animals that actually live up high. However on the 27km drive, through the montane and sub alpine zones, we may see some animals.
